How to begin to eliminate plastic from your life.

I look around my apartment, I realize how much plastic there really is. So many of our products are packaged in it, and we have this old habit of grabbing plastic wrap or a ziploc every time we need to store something small. I feel it is impossible to completely eliminate it at this point. However, I can make small changes, I can make a difference. I want to do that for two reasons. For our health, and for mother nature.
I have read one too many articles about plastic leaking harmful chemicals into our food, especially when heated up. Check that out for yourself and get ready to be shopping for alternatives. For this reason, we began buying glass storage containers with bpa free lids instead of the regular tupperware. We find them at target, home goods, marshalls etc. They are everywhere now. We also use glass water bottles unless we are hiking or traveling, then we opt for the larger, bpa free plastic water bottles. We love mason jars (that can also be found literally everywhere), and we save glass jars from the food that we buy, wash them out, and reuse. I am mid transition, and have a few products that may help you to to use less plastic in your life. The plastic that we do use from opening packages or new products can be sent to recycling but let's see what we can do on our own to just use less as consumers.
Reusable grocery bags: I keep these in my car, and right next to our front door. I still manage to forget them at times but normally, I have them when I need them. These are my favorite for produce, and they double as a beach bag or a "catch all" when traveling. They can be washed but just lay them out to dry so they don't shrink.
Bees wrap: This is new for me and I am so excited about it! This product is reusable, you just wash with cool water and they "seal" (with a small amount of wax) around a bowl or food from the warmth of your hands. Amazing.
Stasher bags: I had been looking around because there are several brands of these "permanent ziploc bags" and I ended up going with this brand after reading reviews and checking out the material. I will have to collect more over time but so far love what I have! They keep food fresh, they don't leak harmful chemicals into what you're eating and they are durable enough to be submerged in hot water to cook eggs, veggies or other types of food in them.
When we hear about the problems in the world, there is usually something at home that we can do to make an impact. On top of that, my family's health is a priority, and always will be. These products will cost more upfront but of course, over time will be the more cost effective option and they will also stay out of the oceans and landfills, if we are careful and conscious. I love that I can make small changes that really add up over time.
