Why we use collagen daily & how we get it for free

As we age, collagen production (known as the “glue that holds us together”) decreases in our bodies. We are left with brittle nails, painful joints, lackluster hair, and loss of elasticity in our skin. Hmmm, pass the collagen powder please! I don’t consider it the fountain of youth as some do, but definitely a worthwhile supplement. Collagen is necessary for healthy joints, tendons, muscles, gut lining and more. Bone broth is one way we increase our collagen intake, and my gut health has improved so much since I started doing this. We also found that adding collagen to our daily cup of coffee is an easy way to increase our intake, and make a frothy delicious drink. It’s a win-win.

Our favorite recipe is the bulletproof coffee:

2 cups of bulletproof coffee

1 tbsp of mct oil

1 scoop of bulletproof collagen

Classically, 1 tbsp of grass fed butter or ghee is added as well. Lately we have been skipping this step. Make it to your preferences, I have added cinnamon as well before. All versions have been delicious.

Blend all ingredients in blender on low for 6 seconds or until ingredients are incorporated. Pour into favorite mug and savor.

It ends up being creamy, frothy, and so delicious! Another benefit: I wake up very early and this keeps me feeling full until I eat breakfast around 9. I also notice my mood is always better when I have those healthy fats and protein on board.

I often share my love for this coffee with friends and family but a common objection I hear is the price. I do consider quality food/supplements an investment in my health, but don’t worry, I hear you!

Riley and I have actually been using an app that gives us points back to spend and we always have enough to cover our large bag of bulletproof collagen (two people using a scoop a day for about a month).

Here’s how it works: when you sign up with Drop, you select a handful of stores that you shop at frequently to redeem points for. You link your credit card so that the app recognizes that you spent money at one of those stores, and you automatically earn points, no extra work needed. There are additional bonus categories within the app that can help you rack up points quicker, for instance 15,000 points for signing up with HULU, which equates to $15 back.

The points are redeemable for a variety of options like amazon or whole foods gift cards, so we choose one of those and grab our collagen for free. Drop has allowed us to have our favorite drink in the morning at a discount, and that feels pretty good. We always joke that we moved to the Bay Area, and then learned how to save money. This place and the housing prices will make anyone resourceful ;)
